MILWAUKEE (CBSMiami/AP) — Professional athletes have always shown a propensity to give back to their respective alma maters and their surrounding communities.

NBA star and former Marquette University basketball player Dwyane Wade is funding a summer reading program for Milwaukee students to help close the area’s literacy gap.

The university said Monday the Miami Heat player has pledged $195,000 over three years to fund the Dwyane Wade “Live the Dream” Summer Reading program at the school’s learning and literacy center. Wade challenged others in the community to match his gift so the program for second- and third-graders would be funded for six years.

The program is set to start sometime in 2015 and will provide free transportation for children to and from Marquette’s campus.

Wade attended the university from 2000 to 2003. He made the donation through his Wade’s World Foundation.
